The Delhi-based Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) may soon have a branch in Amravati. The institute which was set up in Delhi in 1965 by the Government of India will start the academic sessions soon.

A proposal to set up a central university that comes under the centre’s purview is also pending with the central government. Incidentally, Amravati also happens to be president Pratibha Patil’s home district. IIMC is one of the premier institutes in the state for teaching, training and research in mass communication. The central government had proposed to set up a branch in Amravati recently, which is under process.

“The centre had proposed to set up a branch in the Vidarbha region. Amravati and Nagpur was under consideration for the same. However, it was found that institutes in Nagpur already have courses to offer in mass communication. Amravati was therefore finalised and the government sought a land in the district from the state government. A land has already been located for the institute’s branch and we hope to start the academic session soon,” said an official.

While it could be just a coincidence, the state has asked for a central university in the state, also in Amravati. The state already has a central university, Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, in Wardha. The university in Wardha, was one reason why the state did not get any allocation in the union budget two years ago, when the centre announced to set up 16 central universities in the country. A central university comes directly under the functioning of the Government of India and therefore, helps students benefit from several popular courses. Though Maharashtra lost out in the last allocation, a recent proposal for the central university in Amravati is pending with the centre.

A senior academician, on condition of anonymity, said, “It is the president’s constituency and therefore is getting importance. I wonder if they would conduct a feasibility study before setting up an institute in Amravati, and not set up in Mumbai and Pune.”
