Maharashtra government today announced financial assitance of Rs2 lakh to the kin of each of the six firemen of the Thane Municipal fire services, who died due to suffocation while trying to extinguish a fire at a residential complex.
    
Chief minsiter Ashok Chavan made the announcement, lauding the bravery of the firefighters and their sacrifice in line of duty. Deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal and NCP state unit president RR Patil also appreciated the work done by fire fighters. Bhujbal said the fire fighters made "paramount sacrifice" while discharging their duties.
    
Meanwhile, a senior official in Thane said authorities will seek a report on the lift maintenance status in the building.
    
Six firemen were among the team who had gone to attend to a call in the Tarangam housing complex of Vartak Nagar locality in neighbouring Thane district.
    
The six firemen were killed due to suffocation inside the lift of the building, which failed.
