A 25-year-old businessman from Bhandup killed his two daughters, wife and then committed suicide at his residence on Friday. Dinesh Jain, a resident of Jalaram Complex at Sonapur junction in Bhandup, killed his wife Monica, 22, and daughters — three-year-old Harsha and nine-month-old Tushika — on Friday between midnight and 2am and then committed suicide by hanging himself to a ceiling fan.

In a suicide note, Jain wrote he had committed the murders and said nobody should be held responsible for this. He also wrote he would no more be able to serve his parents.
Jain’s sister-in-law Ramila, who lived in the same flat but was visiting a relative in Mulund when the crime took place, said when she came to meet the family in the morning, the doorbell was not answered. She then informed her uncle who stays in a locality nearby.

Jain’s uncle along with a few other people broke open the door and found Monica, Harsha and Tushika dead in the bedroom, while Jain was found hanging in the kitchen.

Police found a nylon rope around Tushika’s neck which would have been used to strangulate her and Harsha. The children’s bodies were lying beside their mother’s.

Monica’s ears had blood traces, which suggested she might have been smothered by Jain, using a pillow. Both Jain and Monica’s right hand wrists had slit marks. The police have also recovered the blade which could have been used to cause the injury.

Jain stayed in the same flat with his parents, elder brother Jayantilal, sister-in-law Ramila and their two children. Jain’s parents, Jayantilal, Ramila and their children had left for their native place in the Udaipur, Rajasthan, a few days ago. But Ramila had returned to city along with her children and was staying at her mother’s house in Mulund.

Deputy commissioner of police RM Vhatkar said investigation showed Jain was not facing any financial problem. Jain had done bachelor in pharmacy and ran a provision store in the same locality, while his elder brother ran a hardware shop. The family owned three other shops they had leased out.

“We are trying to find out what drove him to the extreme step,” Vhatkar said, adding that a day before the incident took place, no fight or unusual incident was witnessed by the closed ones.

A neighbour said Jain was a reserved person, but Monica was jovial and friendly. Jain and his family had been staying in this complex for the past five years. Another neighbour said, “Late in the night, I heard the screeching sound of chairs being dragged. But I thought their children might be playing.” The chair was apparently used by Jain to raise himself to hang.

The suicide note written by Jain is in Hindi, but the signature is in English. Police will verify it with handwriting experts and will speak to Jain’s parents and brother upon their return.
