With projects such as an international innovative park and a multi model corridorconnecting far off areas of Mumbai Metropolitan Region such as Alibaug and Virar, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been planning projects of gigantic stature. However, with acute shortage of land within the region, such project with huge land requirement may turn out to be non-viable, if a section of the officials in authority are to be believed.
Ratnakar Gaikwad, the present chief secretary whose last post was metropolitan commissioner, has been the brainchild behind projects such as a multi-model corridor— a freeway with road as well as metro connectivity from Alibaug to Virar or the international innovative park- where thousands of scientists across the globe can engage in research work. While Gaikwad’s aggressive nature was appreciated by most of his colleagues, many were also concerned about the feasibility of these projects.
While some officials still feel that such projects can be executed, a top official of the authority has expressed concerns over land acquisition issues. “Not just in the metropolitan region, but in any part of the country, there are issues related to land acquisition which have forced the projects to go on a back foot. In MMR, such projects will obviously face resistance due to the sheer amount of land needed to be acquired. Although the planning needs to be meticulous to make such gigantic projects feasible and viable, they at times may turn out to be non-realistic,” said a top authority official requesting anonymity.
While Innovation Park project is to be carried out by Mahindra Life spaces. However, the exact location and space for the project is yet to be clear. The authority is preparing the Detailed Project Report for the multi-model corridor, which will later go in for bidding. Although the land acquisition issues for the corridor are yet to be discussed at authority level.
