Mumbai University has introduced a unique examination code system for its engineering courses to make it convenient for students, many of who fail to understand the exam timetable. The code number will help expedite processing of results too, says the university.

The numeric unique code number consists of eight digits in which every single or double digit/s has an identity of its own.

“Students of Mumbai University, appearing for their exam from March 2011 onwards, will no longer need to search for the schedule in the comprehensive list of over 700 courses. They will, instead, simply have to look for a unique code for their subjects and courses. We have implemented the unique code for 14 branches and 34 courses of engineering/technology in the initial phase this year,” said Vilas Shinde, controller of examinations, Mumbai University.

There are several undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma courses that the university offers and the students find it difficult to search for their papers in the list. This code system is expected to make it easier for students, colleges and the university.

He said another major advantage of the new system is that it will expedite pre-exam and post-exam work from printing of hall tickets to scanning of OMR sheets of the candidate and marks submitted by the examiner.

In this regard, the university has just implemented the OMR and bar coded answer books for engineering examinations, which commenced from November 29.

A meeting of all principals had also been convened by the university vice chancellor on November 11 to give them an understanding of the reforms being undertaken.

A circular has been issued to colleges which run engineering courses with a comprehensive list of all courses and the code numbers attached to them. “For the remaining courses and faculties, the code numbers will be issued by the end of December,” said Shinde.
