Rattled by the rising incidents of undertrials escaping from the Sassoon General Hospital, the city police have decided to appoint an officer of the rank of assistant police inspector (API) or police sub-inspector (PSI) and five constables, who would accompany undertrials brought to the hospital.

Seven undertrials have escaped from the hospital in 14 months.  The police team would work in two shifts of 12 hours each.
A senior police officer told DNA, “The officer and five policemen would be stationed at the medical legal cases ward office. The officer would have to register the undertrial’s details like name, ailment and ward number where the undertrial is taken for medical examination.”

At night, an officer of the rank of assistant commissioner of police (ACP) or police inspector (PI) would conduct a round of the hospital.

The officer said, “The decision has been made because of the recent incidents of jail inmates fleeing from the Sassoon hospital. It would definitely make difference in the future”. On Friday, the city police had a meeting with the Sassoon hospital authorities and it was decided to allot two wards for the jail inmates.
