Around seven unidentified armed robbers allegedly molested a woman and threw her husband out of a running train near Vangni, killing him, and looted the family, on Thursday night.

The incident took place in a general coach of the Pune-Rawal Express between 8.30 pm and 10.15 pm. The body was later recovered by the Kayan general railway police.

The deceased, Dilip Kalu Salat, 21, a resident of Vadodara in Gujarat, was going home from Pune along with his wife Mala, his brother Pappu Salat, 25, and his brother’s wife Tejal for the Navratri celebrations.

The family works as vendors of toys and cutlery and had been to Pune for marketing their goods. They had boarded the train at Pune.

According to Pappu, two of the seven robbers were carrying swords. “Three of them boarded the train at Pune, two at Lonavala station and two at Karjat station,” said Pappu, who was also injured in the fight.

After Lonavala station, they tried to molest Mala and when Dilip opposed them, they took out their swords, fought Dilip and flung him out of the train into the jungles. They had snatched Dilip’s wallet, mobile and cash from his pocket.

“Dilip had pushed us into the lavatory and was fighting alone with them,” Pappu said. After a few minutes, they could not hear Dilip, but the robbers had started kicking on the door of the lavatory and they did not dare to open the door.

When the train stopped at Kalyan station, they came out of the lavatory and rushed to the railway police station. He also said that they tried to pull the chain, but the train did not stop. None of the passengers in the coach helped them, since the robbers had swords.

“We sent a team for search and found Dilip’s body near Vangni station,” said senior inspector Ashok Kumar Jadhav from Kalyan General Railway Police. The railway police have filed a case but no arrests were made till Thursday late evening.
