The three-day rare coin exhibition, Coinex 2010, was inaugurated here on Friday by renowned numismatist from Mumbai, Shauheen Daya. The event is being held at Sonal Hall on Karve Road.

Rare coins from the ancient, Moghul, medieval, Maratha and pre-Independence era have been put up on display. There are 100 frames containing the coins, including modern coinage and paper money.

A gold coin, known as hon (Maratha-era coin), used during the coronation ceremony of Chhatrapati Shivaji, is the main attraction. Of interest to Puneites is also the Peshwa-era Pantpradhan Ganpati coin.

Noted numismatist and former professor of Deccan College, Shobhana Gokhale, was felicitated with a lifetime achievement award instituted by the International Collectors’ Society of Rare Items.

Rare coin collectors from Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Indore, Kolkata and Nashik are participating in the exhibition.
