The University of Pune (UoP) has invited tenders from private agencies to enhance security measures on its campus. The varsity has already hired two private security agencies, which employ about 100 guards.

However, the work of the two agencies came in for criticism for not paying salaries to its employees and after many daylight thefts took place on the campus.

Recently, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists created a ruckus on the campus and assaulted a security man. The security officials were not able to catch the suspects. Thefts of computers, taps and other items take place regularly on the campus.

The University has 38 security personnel, but only 30 are available to monitor security arrangements at 42 departments, administrative buildings, four gates, the vice chancellor’s office and others, in three shifts.

The security officials said it is not in their capacity to provide security to all the establishments on the campus for all the three shifts. The UoP is hiring more security personnel to ensure eight personnel per shift.

The security cover at the UoP offices in Nashik and Ahmednagar will also be increased.
