The Juhu police refused to take down the complaint of Leena Majumdar (name changed). The 18-year-old Standard XII student went to the police station on Wednesday afternoon to lodge complaint against Juhu-based photographer RK Bhatnagar (70), who she claimed had been sexually assaulting and  blackmailing her for the past 6 months.

Hailing from a poor family, Majumdar worked for Bhatnagar to bear the medical expenses of her mother, who is in a mental hospital. Her father is a cook in a five-star hotel. Her ordeal allegedly began on the night she refused Bhatnagar’s call to come to his studio. “The next day I reached the office, he raped me. Ever since, he had been assaulting and blackmailing me. Finally, I confided to Tapan Sarkar, my local guardian, and he told me to file a police complaint,” said Majumdar.

She went to the police station on Wednesday afternoon. Duty officer Suresh Nalwade listened to her but refused to take down the complaint. When the matter reached DCP Amitabh Gupta, he called up Senior Police Inspector Pradeep Shinde, who called both the girl and Bhatnagar to the police station.

“While I was waiting at the police station, Bhatnagar went to my house. He also sent me an sms, threatening to kill my father. I have kept it saved,” said Majumdar.

On Thursday, Majumdar, accompanied by Sarkar, went to meet Gupta. Gupta advised them to return to the police station and file a complaint. They did, but again the cops on duty refused to take it down. Majumdar and Sarkar went to Additional Commissioner Bipin Bihari’s office and, finally, submitted the complaint. Bihari said, “How can the police refuse to take down her complaint? This is shocking. I’ll look into the matter.”

Bhatnagar claimed he was being framed by Majumdar. “She’s of questionable character. I was trying to reform her,” he said.
