Well-known photographer Subi Samuel is treading into production with his first film, ‘Alag’, through his production company, Subi Samuel Movies Pvt Ld. His film, directed by Aashu Trikha, has Dia Mirza and newcomer Akshay Kapoor in the lead.
Subi perceives the film more as a passionate work between friends than a commercial venture. “In fact, when Aashu narrated the script to me, I thought we must make it ourselves rather than trusting some other producer who might want to change it according to the so-called commercial demands.” But why didn’t he direct the film himself as it would seem a natural progression for someone who is a talented photographer? “Let’s just say that I want to learn more about the trade before I plunge into direction,” says Subi.
Describing the movie, Subi says “it is science fiction with a lot of emotions thrown in. It is the story of this boy who has special powers but doesn’t like them really.” Doesn’t it dangerously sound like Rakesh Roshan’s ‘Krrish’? “No!” protests Subi, “I don’t have any kind of illusions that it will be like ‘Krrish’. It is an entirely different film.”
Why did he opt for a new face - Akshay Kapoor to play such an important role? “I wanted someone who didn’t have a set image,” Subi says, “established stars come with their own baggage. And I am glad to say that Akshay has proved to be the perfect choice. He is a complete dynamite. He has added more to the character than what was originally conceived.” Subi has praises for Dia too: “This is Dia’s best performance so far. She is absolutely brilliant. She has added many shades to her character.” Aadesh Srivastava has done the music direction and the film is expected to be released in April this year.
