Coming up on March 11 is ‘Birdsong’, co-written by Vikram Kapadia and Mohit Mehra and directed by Ponaam Sareen. “It talks about how climbing new peaks is possible if we hear the little bird that resides within us who is yearning to be set free,” elaborates Sareen.

The play sees co-actors Nisha Sareen and Vikram Kapadia, who play father and daughter in ‘K Street Pali Hill’, come together on stage for the first time.

“Nisha and I share a father-daughter relationship in real life and hence I decided to help out in the play,” says Kapadia. He modestly adds, “I have only fine-tuned the script which is written by Mohit.”

For Nisha, working with Vikram was like old times, “I have a special relationship with him and respect and trust him.” The role of the protagonist Piali was challenging. “After a long time I found something I was passionate about,” she adds.

Along with Kapadia and Sareen, Hrishikesh Kannan also forms part of the star cast. “Mohit called me in the middle of the night and said he had written a play and wanted to call the main character Hrishikesh Kannan,” laughs Hrishikesh. “I read the script in one sitting and identified with the character completely.”

Organised under the banner of Speed, Sareen goes on to explain what the organisation stands for. “They believe in personality development and confidence building but prefer to tackle this through drama kinetics. I started out nearly two decades ago with 5-year-old school children,” she explains, “and soon realised that their parents and young adults too had many queries and could do with the kind of programmes we offer at Speed.”

Having received tremendous appreciation at their show in Bangalore, Sareen and company are ready to open to Mumbai audiences and take the play across the country. “Our first official show was in Mumbai but it was a corporate show. Now we are ready for a larger audience,” concludes Sareen with her fingers crossed.
