What do you get when you add up the world's nonsense, and let anyone and everyone constantly update and edit it? Uncyclopedia, of course.

One of the most popular in a host of brand new wikis, taking off on the popularity of Wikipedia, Uncyclopedia is a free website that is maintained and edited by “Gods amongst men, known for their great UNknowledge and UNwisdom, and love of cheese helmets”.

Of course, if you’re looking for factual information, you’re going to get very little here. But it will tell you, for example, that “the current prime minister of the Undead Kingdom is Toh -oh-ooony Bleauaaargh” and that “Osama Bin Laden is the popular American rap artist most known for bringing out the single Which Backstreet Boy is Gay”.

If you key in the word ‘cell phone’ in the search box, you’ll get a rather funny concoction: “The cellular telephone (or ‘cell phone’) was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1282. It uses advanced NASA technology to play games, mp3s and take pictures of friends in pubs. Some have been known to transmit phone calls too.”

What is all this nonsense, you ask. Well, as experiments in human time-wasting on a large scale go, this is definitely one of the better ones.

A repository of UNinformation —  that is information which has no factual base — it is one of the funniest things on the internet. And best of all, you (yes, you!) are free to edit any page on the site and add your own falsehoods to the growing community.

The quality of writing on the site is kept up and maintained, just like Wikipedia, by a fairly large group of committed volunteers. And it is truly fascinating to watch how a group of people working together from around the world can come up with so much nonsense, and yet maintain a fairly high standard of writing which is consistently humourous.

You can spend countless hours in front of the computer screen laughing at the absurdity on the site. They even have UNBooks, and UNnews, for which the top story at the time of writing was, “Reporters Report that they are Reporting that they are. . .” Ahh, if only the real world was as much fun as that.
