MUMBAI: Achin Bansal from Punjab topped this year's All India Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) conducted by Indian Institute of Technology while Ankita Sharma from Mumbai topped among girls.
Among the number of qualified candidates, Mumbai zone topped the list with 2,235 students while Delhi zone was second in number with 1398 candidates, Prof Pandalai, chairman IIT-JEE-2007 and Prof JM Vasi Deputy director, IIT Mumbai said on Wednesday.
The total number of students who appeared for the JEE this year was 2,43,029 of which 7,209 are eligible to seek admission to 5,537 seats in IITs at Mumbai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Chennai and Roorkee, IT-BHU Varanasi and ISMU, Dhanbad, they said.
Achin Bansal hails from Kot Kapura, a small town in Punjab, and is the son of a medical practitioner.
Bansal said he intended to do computer science course from IIT Mumbai.
This year 54,025 girls wrote the JEE and 587 qualified with Ankita Sharma from Anushakti Nagar, with an all India rank of 55, topping the list.
Sharma, daughter of a Nuclear Power Corporation of India official, said that she had not yet decided about the branch in which she wanted to study.
Asked about the 27 per cent OBC reservation quota, Pandalai said that as per apex court directives, there will not be separate quota for OBC this year, although around 17 to 18 per cent of seats were reserved for students from this category.
IITs admit SC/ST students with relaxed criteria and this year 20,892 Scheduled Caste candidates appeared for the JEE of which 594 qualified and similarly of the 5,909 Scheduled Tribe candidates who wrote the exam, 109 candidates qualified.
Anasuya Mandal, who topped among SC candidates, was ranked 449 in the common merit list while Varunie Shashni who topped among SC category, ranked 983 in the common merit list, the Chairman of IIT-JEE said.
Candidates with certified physical disabilities (PD) are also granted admission with relaxed norms and 15 candidates qualified under these norms.
For students with reading disability specially enlarged question papers were provided this year, they said.
The counselling of all the qualified students will take place between June 18 and 22.
IITs have also put out an extended merit list and students on this list may also be counselled by the Indian Institute of Space Science, Thiruvananthapuram, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research at Pune, Kolkata and Mohali.
The Directorate General of Shipping also offers admission based on JEE results, Pandalai said.
Asked about the examination papers for next year, he said, "Since we changed the exam paper pattern this year and it was more simplified, we have lot of students from the state boards also including the topper."
"We have to study the entire process before talking about next year's papers. By making papers easier, a chance is given to students who do not go to coaching classes," he said.
"We also made provisions for girls and provided them with admission forms at half the price," he said adding that compared to last year 193 more girls cleared the test this year.
