With rain gods refusing to show mercy, the civic body is ready with its plan B to counter the depleting lake levels.

To augment the city’s water supply for non-potable purposes, BMC is already in the process of reviving 150 existing municipal wells from Colaba to Dahisar. Also, additional 100 bore wells will be dug up after proper geological and hydrological studies are conducted on municipal plots.

According to BMC officials, this initiative will help in reducing the pressure on the municipal water supply. “The aim is to provide non-potable water for all secondary purposes including gardening, flushing, washing clothes and vehicles as well as for fire-fighting,” said a civic official.

However, the civic body has not decided on the quantity of water that will be utilised. “We are also trying to recharge the wells so that they don’t dry up after use,” said the official.

“We will also set up filling points for fire engines. This way they won’t have to use municipal water,” he added.

To ensure easier identification of the wells in the future, BMC also plans to map
all 12,340 wells (private and municipal) on the development plan.
