It’s a double jackpot for IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) toppers. On Saturday, when the results of the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) was declared, they knew they had done it again. The IIT JEE rank no 1 Nitin Jain from Faridabad also became the all India topper in AIEEE scoring 417/432.

With several IIT top rankers grabbing top slots in AIEEE, most prefer to join the country’s prestigious IITs.

“I am keen on joining IIT-Delhi where I want to pursue computer science. I studied for both the exams simultaneously, and that is how I scored well in both the exams,” said Nitin Jain from Faridabad. Nearer home, 17-year-old Pararth Shah, who was the state topper with an all-India rank 4 in IIT-JEE, has ranked second in the state in AIEEE exams and 12th in all India.

Says Shah, a student of AV Patel Junior College, Vile Parle, “I attribute my success to the rigorous training I underwent for JEE. As it primarily covers a very wide syllabus, I didn’t have to spend too much time preparing for other entrance tests like AIEEE, BIT-SAT and MHT-CET. For AIEEE, I merely had to solve some practice papers.”

Shah, who now wants to pursue computer science from IIT Bombay, said that though he was confident of getting a good rank in JEE, he had given AIEEE as he wanted to keep his “options open”.

Similarly, Priyank Parikh, student of Sathaye College, Vile Parle, is the second state topper in JEE and has also ranked fifth in the state in AIEEE. The AIEEE scores are used to secure admissions in BE/BTech and BArch/BPlanning in various national-level institutes.  From Mumbai, over 29,000 candidates took the exam across 37 centres, a rise from 26,896 in 2008. Close to 2.4 lakh appeared from Maharashtra. Around 9,62,119 students appeared for AIEEE across the country.

The exam has seen a steady rise of aspirants (over 63%) in last two years. This year, the admission procedure for all the 20 NITs and five IIITs and others are being made completely online through Central Counselling Board (CCB) based on the AIEEE-2009 ranks for the convenience of the students and their parents. Candidates can exercise their choices for branches and institutes online.
