Leading 3-1 from the first leg at Old Trafford, Manchester United sauntered their way into the group stages of the UEFA Champions League with a blistering performance from Captain Wayne Rooney. Rooney ended 848 minutes without a goal as he gently stroked the ball over Club Brugge’s goalkeeper Bolat.

United’s new number 7, Memphis Depay was in the thick of it as he collected the ball on the left, drove inside, skipped past a couple of challenged and passed the ball to Rooney. The skipper didn’t need a second invitation as he scored the first goal.

Rooney again scored in the 49th minute with Memphis again pulling the strings. Clear through on goal, instead of shooting, Depay passed the ball to Rooney who just couldn’t miss. For the third goal Juan Mata ran in from the right and passed to Rooney who calmly slotted the ball home. Things got worse when Ander Herrera picked up a Bastian Schwensteiger pass and slid it confidently past Bolat.

Brugge came close to adding a little dignity to the scoreline when Dierckx smashed the underside of the bar from 30 yards but it just didn’t seem like a night when Brugge could score.

Things got even worse when Manchester United handed a penalty after the ball hit Brugge’s Duarte on the head and bounced off his arm. Chicharito stepped up to take the penalty and shockingly did a John Terry as he slipped during the run up and missed.

The reaction from LVG was scary to say the least:

Somehow, Javier Hernandez managed to miss another clear-cut chance from three yards out when he spooned an Ashley Young cross but it will all be forgotten as United returned to Europe's high table.
