British Prime Minister David Cameron has hailed the performance of his country’s cricket team after being crowned as the number one Test side in the world.

England propelled to the top of world Test rankings after defeating India by an innings, and-242 runs in the third Test at Edgbaton.

Cameron said he watched the closing stages of the match and lauded the ‘massive team effort’.

“I congratulate the England cricket team on their fantastic achievement. Their performance in this Test - including England's highest-ever innings score in a non-timeless Test and Alastair Cook's magnificent 294 - against the team that has up to now been ranked number one in the world, is a tribute to their domination of the sport,” Cameron was quoted, as saying by The Daily Mirror.

“I watched the closing overs on the sofa at home and will remember the joy of the crowd at Edgbaston and England getting to number one in such style for a long time to come,” he added.

India, who arrived for the tour as the highest ranked Test side, has slumped to an unassailable 3-0 deficit in the four-match series.

Cameron also said he was happy and proud that the team had achieved such a feat by playing competitive cricket.

“The whole nation can be very proud of our team of world beaters,” he said.
