Yuvraj, who has been working out at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore for the last 10 days, will be main topic of discussion when the selectors meet in New Delhi on Monday.
The Punjab batsman seems to have cleared the air over discipline issues, having apologised to the BCCI on the showcause notice served on him.
The Board has also put the discipline issue behind. But the main issue is fitness. Gary Kirsten had criticised some players’ fitness after India’s debacle at the World T20 and if Yuvraj has managed to attain the fitness levels, he should be picked.
The selectors are expected to receive report on the fitness of the players before they meet.
With not many members of the current squad that is playing in Zimbabwe succeeding to make a mark in the ongoing tri-series, the selectors are likely to fall back on the tried and tested ones, like MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, provided they clear the fitness tests.
Only Rohit Sharma, besides captain Suresh Raina and vice-captain Virat Kohli, could find berths in the Asia Cup squad. Players like Ashok Dinda, R Ashwin, Yusuf Pathan have fifty-fifty chances.
The main question, of course, is the availability of Sachin Tendulkar. He will be picked if he makes himself available for selection but it will be known only on Monday if the Little Master has asked to be considered for selection.
Till Sunday night, the selectors were not aware if Tendulkar is available or not.
