Tiger Woods refuses to commit himself to US Ryder Cup team

American World No. 1 golfer Tiger Woods has refused to commit himself to playing for the US in this year’s Ryder Cup if selected by captain Corey Pavin.

"I’m planning on playing my way into the team," The Telegraph quoted Woods, as saying.

With just two events left in the process that determines the eight automatic qualifiers for the US team, Woods is way behind in the race for the tournament to be held this year at Celtic Manor in Wales in October.

Woods is currently at an unusual ninth position, which would mean that he would need Pavin to make him an at-large selection if the picks were made today.

In the qualification table, Woods is 163 points behind eighth-place Dustin Johnson and trails seventh-place Matt Kuchar by 165 points.

Phil Mickelson leads the list, followed by Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Jeff Overton, Anthony Kim, Lucas Glover, Kuchar and Johnson.

Following Woods are Hunter Mahan, Ricky Barnes and Ben Crane.

Earlier, Pavin had said that he wants Woods in his team.

"I want him on the team, there’s no doubt about it. He’s the best player in the world. He’s the No. 1 player and he’s going to make Team USA better if he’s on it," Pavin had said.
