In the wake of increasing terrorist activity in Pakistan, Indian authorities have decided to beef up security for diplomatic staff in Islamabad by sending a CISF unit to Pakistan to protect the Indian embassy there.

Sources in Islamabad’s diplomatic circles said Indian authorities have approved a plan to erect a new building for the embassy on 10 acres in Islamabad’s Diplomatic Enclave, for which contracts are already being awarded to different parties.

The huge project is likely to be completed in two years. Approached for comments, first secretary at the Indian High Commission Sidharth Zutshi said, “We have a plot of around 10 acres in the Diplomatic Enclave, which has been lying vacant for the last 20-25 years. We are now planning to build residential accommodation for our staff.” But he claimed the building expansion project was an old one and there was nothing new to it.

Diplomatic sources further said India has also decided to send a special unit of trained commandos to protect top Indian diplomats in Islamabad. The batch of 16 personnel, highly trained in commando skills and unarmed combats, belong to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The team includes a few drivers, trained in VIP security drills.

The sources, however, said that the Pakistan government looks after the Indian embassy’s security. So, the actual role of the CISF commandos would be finalised after an assessment report is prepared.

Approached for comments, Pakistani foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit said he needed to check with the concerned desk but his view was that such an activity would have the sanction of the Government of Pakistan.

But in case of the Indian High Commission, the expansion does not mean any increase in staff strength. He said that neither India nor Pakistan can unilaterally increase staff in their respective high commissions.
