Police officials investigating the gang involved in credit card frauds have found that gang members were using the social networking site, Facebook, to keep abreast of developments in their case and even warning each other of possible police action.
On Wednesday, the detection of crime branch (DCB) arrested a man who had alerted members of his gang through Facebook.
The arrested man, Mohabbat Rao, had been on the run for some time. Rao is a close aide of Hukumsinh Rao, the kingpin of the cloned credit card fraud, who was arrested by the DCB on June 9, 2012.
“Mohabbat used to update his Facebook profile with details of developments in the credit card fraud case and the action taken by the police,” said police inspector, DCB, DD Damor.
He added that Mohabbat was involved in several credit card fraud cases in the city. “He is also in touch with the Nigerians who had provided the gang with data for the cloned cards,” Damor said.
He further said that Mohabbat often visits Mumbai and is in touch with the Nigerians who sell data and the ready-to-use cloned credit cards.
“Now that he has been arrested, we expect to get more details about the involvement of the Nigerians in the frauds,” he said.
On June 9, the DCB busted the gang involved in cloning of credit cards and arrested three people in this connection. According to sources in the police, the gang was active in other parts of country too.
The kingpin of the gang, Hukumsinh, was arrested by a team of Mumbai, Goa and Rajasthan police. “He is one of the first criminals to have carried out fraud through cloned credit cards across the country,” a source in the police said.
