In the case of a scooter stolen five years ago still generating traffic violation challans, cops found out that the current owner of the vehicle had bought it from a police auction. Investigation revealed that the vehicle had gone for auction after cops didn't follow due procedure.

As per cops, a vehicle theft complaint was lodged with Maninagar police station in December 2014 by Abhishek Kadhiya, owner of the scooter. In 2015, the same vehicle was bought in an auction held by Vatva GIDC police.

A senior police officer said, "A procedure needs to be followed before putting an unclaimed vehicle up for auction. The cops should have verified with other police stations and RTOs about the vehicle and whether the owner could be contacted."

In this case, either Vatva GIDC police station had failed to inform or Maninagar police station had failed to reply.

AG Chauhan, DCP Traffic east, said, "There was some negligence on the part of one of the police stations. The vehicle should have been given to Maninagar police station as the theft case was registered with them. Right now, we are making a report on the matter and will submit it to the police commissioner, after which, an inquiry will be made to find the culprit."

On Tuesday morning, two teams were deployed at Paldi and Kalgi crossroads and told to look out for a vehicle with number plate GJ.27.F.7078. The woman driving it was detained and a team was sent to her home in Vatva. Her father said they bought the scooter in 2015 at an auction held by Vatva GIDC police station.

The vehicle originally belonged to Maninagar resident Abhishek Kadhiya who had been receiving traffic challans since October 2018, though five years ago, the two-wheeler had been stolen. Despite a written application to Ahmedabad police commissioner, no action was taken to nab the thief, nor had the current rider been traced.
