Act’s Impact: Regional transport office to hold four such camps on Sept 29 and Oct 2, 6 & 13
With over one crore vehicles yet to get the High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), the state transport department has directed the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Gujarat to hold special camps for the same.
According to transport department official, around four camps, specifically providing HSRP facilities at various RTO offices across the state, will be held on September 29, October 2, 6 and 13. All these camps are being held either on a Sunday or on public holidays so that the maximum number of citizens can take advantage of it.
“We have also directed the RTOs to coordinate and get in touch with Resident Welfare Associations in each of their cities. The officials will collect data about the number of members, their vehicles and how many of them are yet to get HSRP,” said the official.
The official also said that one of the prime reasons for over one crore vehicles yet to get HSRP despite several extensions given by the state government is due to lack of awareness. “Moreover, the actual numbers are likely to be a bit less as many of the vehicles registered are over 18 years old and may get scrapped or out of use,” said the official.
Apparently, after the amended Motor Vehicle Act came into effect, the government had extended the deadline for HSRP up to October 16.
An RTO official said that most of the vehicles, which are yet to get an HSRP, are old vehicles. “All new vehicles are fitted with HSRP as car dealers provide new cars with this facility,” said the official.
“However, for old vehicles which are no longer in use, the owner needs to inform the RTO but that doesn’t happen so they continue to be on record despite no HSRP,” added the official.
The state government has so far extended the deadline eleven times, the last being August 31. But it has been changed to October 16 after the new Motor Vehicle Act came into existence.
