Happy Birthday Kajol: Actor's stunning transformation from dusky diva to queen of hearts

Kajol started out in the industry as a dusky teenage girl with voluminous curly hair and lively nature. Kajol never conformed or tried to compete with other actresses and was always true to herself. Her unique unibrow made her stand out from the lot and the actress ruled the 90s and early 20s with her sartorial choices and stupendous acting.

It is said, that the always bubbly and chirpy Kajol was quite picky with her choices of colours. The actress preferred not to wear to many blacks which then gave way to lighter and brighter colours.

Kajol took a break from acting after ‘Kabhi Khushi kabuki Ghum’ in 2001 and returned to the screen with Aamir Khan starrer ‘Fanaa’. She went on to star in several critically acclaimed films such as ‘My Name is Khan’, ‘Tanhaji’ and ‘Tribhanga’. The versatile actor embraced different roles and aced them too.  

After taking a sabbatical, Kajol was again seen in the public eye but with fairer skin. This raised suspicions were many said that the actor has undergone skin lightening treatment to get a fairer skin tone. Quashing the rumours, Kajol clarified that her lighter skin tone is a result of de-tanning, and not surgery.

In an earlier interview with a leading news agency, Kajol said that she feels relevant today because of her personality. “My personality has grown on screen and off screen with age. I am way smarter, cooler than what I was at the age 16. I am more beautiful. I think I am bound to be relevant in a lot of ways,” she said.

In another interview, the actress said that it took her many years to see herself as ‘beautiful’. "The idea of seeing the beauty in imperfection is something my grandmother tried to instill in me at a very young age. She was considered one of the great beauties of her time, but she always told me, 'It's my slight cockeye that makes me beautiful!' Yet, it was many years before I could look at myself in the mirror and go, 'You are beautiful!'," Kajol told Netflix India. 

She then clarifies that despite everything, she was extremely confident in her own skin. "Don't get me wrong - I was very confident in my skin growing up. There were many adjectives I applied to myself: attractive, smart, cool, sexy even. But I didn't consider myself beautiful. A lot of it had to do with what everybody was spouting at that time. It took me a long time to arrive at 'beautiful'. Today, it's an entirely different thing. I don't mean to sound conceited but I often catch myself in the mirror or in a selfie and I'm like, 'Wow… I'm stunning! I hope women everywhere are having similar conversations with themselves," Kajol said.
