Starring Chiranjeevi aka Konidela Sivasankara Varaprasad in the titular role, the action drama Bhola Shankar was released in the cinemas worldwide on Friday, August 11. The film has received poor reviews from audiences and critics, and thus, failed to take a grand opening in India.

As per the entertainment tracking portal Sacnilk.com, Bhola Shankar earned a net collection of Rs 16.25 crore in India on its first day of theatrical release, which is quite less considering Chiranjeevi's super stardom in mind as his previous release Waltair Veerayya had collected Rs 29.6 crore net on its first day in India earlier this year.

While fans can opine that Bhola Shankar saw tough competition from three other films including Rajinikanth's Jailer, which was released a day earlier on Thursday, and Sunny Deol's Gadar 2 and Akshay Kumar's OMG 2 hitting theatres on Friday, it must be noted that Waltair Veeryya also clashed with Nandamuri Balakrishna's Veera Simha Reddy, Ajith Kumar's Thunivu, and Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu at the box office in January.

Apart from Chiranjeevi, Bhola Shankar also stars Tamannaah Bhatia as the 67-year-old actor's love interest, while Keerthy Suresh plays his adopted sister. The film is an official remake of Ajith Kumar's superhit film Vedalam released in 2015. In the original, Shruti Haasan played Ajith's love interest, whereas Lakshmi Menon played his sister.

The latest release marks Meher Ramesh's return to direction after 10 years as his last film was the Venkatesh-starrer Shadow, which turned out to be a box-office disaster in 2013. He has previously directed superstars such as Jr NTR, Prabhas, and the late Puneeth Rajkumar in action dramas, which failed to perform well at the box office.
