This has been proved true recently by Pankaj Tripathi and Kriti Sanon's 2021 film Mimi. The film was made at a budget of Rs 20 crore and earned Rs 298 crore, according to News18. In this article, we will talk about a low budget film which has earned a lot of money but it did not get the limelight because it is a South movie.
We are talking about the film Kanchana which was released in 2011. The film is also known as 'Muni 2: Kanchana'. It is a Tamil-language horror comedy film written, produced and directed by Raghava Lawrence. It is the sequel to his previous venture, Muni (2007) and the second movie of the Muni film series.
Kanchana stars Sarathkumar, Kovai Sarala and Lakshmi Rai in the lead roles alongside Lawrence, while Devdarshini and Sriman are in supporting roles. The film revolves around Raghav, who is afraid to go out and is possessed by an evil spirit. The film was given an A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for violence and horror.
Kanchana had receiving mixed reviews from the audience and the film did good business in both Tamil and Telugu languages. The film has been remade several times, in Kannada as Kalpana, in Sinhala Sri Lanka as Maya, in Bangladesh as Mayabini and in Hindi as Lakshmi. The budget of Kanchana 2 was Rs 7 crore and it earned Rs 108 crore. Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani's film Lakshmi Bomb, which was released in 2020, is a remake of Kanchana 2.
