One of the most challenging jobs of an actor is to make the audience laugh. When we mention comedians and comic actors, we do remember Johnny Walker, Mehmood, Govinda, Johnny Lever, and Paresh Rawal, Kapil Sharma, Sunil Grover, Krushna Abhishek, Sudesh Lehri from Hindi films. 

However, today we will discuss a fine talent, hailed as the 'king of satire' and 'king of comedy'. This skilful artiste had a knack for comedy, and he was famous for addressing social and economic problems most entertainingly. Sadly, at the age of 57, this talented artiste bid goodbye to the world, and his death has left an unforgettable mark on their millions of fans. 

The engineer who went on to become comedy king was...

Jaspal Bhatti was born in Amritsar, East Punjab, Republic of India into a Punjabi Sikh Rajput family. He graduated as an electrical engineer from Punjab Engineering College (PEC) in Chandigarh. During his college days, Bhatti was famous for his street plays like his My Nonsense Club. Most of these plays were spoofs ridiculing the corruption in the society. The late ace comedian was also a cartoonist for the Tribune newspaper in Chandigarh. Jaspal married Savita Bhatti on March 24, 1985, and they have a son, Jasraj Bhatti, and a daughter, Raabiya Bhatti.

The big break that changed Jaspal Bhatti's career forever

Jaspal found immense success when he acted and directed the popular show Ulta Pulta for Doordarshan. Later, he developed a 10-episodic satire comedy series Flop Show, which is still regarded as one of the best satirical comedies. The audience loved how Jaspal would address the common man's problems, with his uniquely funny narrative. Later Bhatti even ventured into films and directed and starred in popular hit comedy films, Mahual Theek Hai and Jija Ji. He also appeared in several other Hindi films, including Jaanam Samjha Karo, Kartoos, Yeh Hai Jalwa, Tujhe Meri Kasam, and Fanaa.

Talents discovered by Jaspal Bhatti 

Jaspal discovered the late Vivek Shaque, and he would appear in almost every episode of Jaspal's show. Sunil Grover, currently one of the biggest comedians in India, was discovered by Bhatti, and he made appearances in Flop Show. 

The tragic death of Jaspal Bhatti 

A day before the release of his son Jasraj's debut film, Power Cut, Bhatti died in a car accident, near Shahkot in the Jalandhar district on 25 October 2012. He was 57. The car was being driven by his son, Jasraj Bhatti, and he also suffered injuries, but his father was declared dead when they took him to the hospital. On Republic Day 2013, Jaspal Bhatti was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India, posthumously, for his contribution to the Arts.
