Vivek Agnihotri has reacted after former J&K CM Omar Abdullah laughed at The Kashmir Files' National Award win.
Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has reacted to former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah mocking his film The Kashmir Files’ National Film Awards win. The Kashmir Files, which released last year, was announced as the winner of Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration at the 69th National Film Awards on Thursday.
On Thursday evening, taking to Twitter, Omar Abdullah shared a tweet from PTI announcing The Kashmir Files’ win and wrote “National integration”, followed by a laughing emoji. The Kashmir Files, which talks about the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley at the height of insurgency, has been called a controversial film. While it made money and was praised as well, many labelled it a propaganda film, questioning its depiction of some events and alleged villainisation of a particular community. Agnihotri has vehemently denied such claims.
On Thursday night, Agnihotri shared Abdullah’s tweet and responded sarcastically, “This is the biggest award coming from you @OmarAbdullah. If you had commented otherwise, I would have been very disappointed. Thanks again.”

The Kashmir Files won another big award on Thursday as Pallavi Joshi was adjudged as the Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal as a conniving left-wing activist in the film. The Kashmir Files, made on a budget of Rs 15 crore, was a massive commercial success making Rs 341 crore worldwide.
In a recent interview with DNA, Agnihotri had addressed the charge of his film being propatganda and said, “You say a lot of people call it propaganda and I want to ask them what the propaganda here is. If this is propaganda, then what is Student of the Year? Isn’t that propaganda for western brands of shoes and clothes? What are these family films? Aren’t they propaganda for some stupid values that nobody adheres to in this country? Aren’t the action films propaganda for violence? There are films where one hero comes in and kills hundreds of people and you have become so numb as audience that you don’t even care for the blood of those hundreds of people. What I am saying is that everything is propaganda these days. But which part, dialogue, or event of The Kashmir Files is propaganda, if anyone can tell me, I guarantee I will publicly admit and delete it. But somebody has to tell me.”
Earlier this month, Agnihotri released a docu series called The Kashmir Files Unreported, based on his research and interviews with victims of the Kashmir Pandit exodus. It is currently streaming on Zee5.
