While Alakh Pandey aka Physics Wallah is the new poster boy of Indian edtech ecosystem, his co-founder Prateek Maheshwari played the crucial role of helping him transform his nascent YouTube channel into a full-fledged tech business with the popular PW app.

Alakh Pandey began the PW journey back in 2016 but his co-founder Prateek Maheshwari joined the vision only in 2019. Maheshwari brought with him prior experience of founding and running firms like PenPencil and Night Panda. While HBTI graduate Alakh Pandey could not fulfill his own IIT dream, he got the same in his co-founder who is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU).

Within a few conversations with Prateek, Alakh knew that they were the right fit. Prateek became the tech brain of the fledgling business and helped convert it from a popular YouTube channel to an EdTech app. The Android app’s launch in May 2020 became a huge hit with it crashing because of overdownloads on the first day. The PW app was downloaded a whopping 3 lakh times in just a week.

In Alakh Pandey’s words, Prateek Maheshwari brought in a “very good tech idea and the business model”. While CEO Alakh takes care of the education and brand part, Prateek is in-charge of the product and technology. Within a few years, PW reached a valuation of $1.1 billion (over Rs 9,000 crore as of today) and established itself as a serious player in a market with rivals like Byju’s, Vedantu, and Unacademy.

PW’s success propelled both Prateek Maheshwari and Alakh Pandey to the rich list with personal net worth of Rs 4000 crore. PW has been profitable for the last 3 years and has acieved 4X growth since FY2022. While the revenue for FY22 was Rs 234 and Rs 780 crore in FY23, the edtech giant now targets reaching over Rs 2400 crore revenue in FY24.
