Arvind Kejriwal meets PM Modi, discusses Delhi violence, coronavirus

Around a week after the national capital was hit by violent riots that have claimed 47 lives so far, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

Coming out of the meeting, Kejriwal said that though Delhi Police did a great job when rumours were about violence were doing the rounds on Sunday, it could have been more proactive in handling the violence. 

This was the first visit between Kejriwal and Modi after the former gained a huge victory in the recently held Delhi Assembly elections.

"I told him on Sunday several rumours were doing the rounds in Delhi and it spread. Delhi Police handled the situation very well and stopped fear-mongering."

"Monday-Tuesday saw the most amount of violence in one district. Had Delhi Police worked with the same efficiency in the past week, they could have saved many more lives," he added.

Kejriwal also said, "the prime minister also agreed that such violent incidents should not be repeated in Delhi."

The two leaders also discussed ways to deal with the coronavirus

When asked about hate speeches by BJP leaders, Kejriwal said that they did not discuss it specifically.

Last week, Kejriwal had met Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah to discuss the law and order situation in the capital following violent clashes in the northeastern district of Delhi. 

On February 19, Kejriwal had a meeting with Shah post the election result in which the AAP chief had said that both leaders have agreed to mutually work on the development of the national capital.

The AAP secured 62 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly Elections that were held on February 8 while the BJP won the rest eight.
