Though the cancellation of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 exams 2021 has brought cheer to lakhs of students who were to take the exams, it has also got with it a fair share of worry and uncertainty regarding the assessment criteria.

While announcing the cancellation of exams, PM Modi had said that boards (CBSE and CISCE) will take steps to compile the results in a “well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner.” On the assessment of marks, PM Modi said the final evaluation criteria would be announced soon.

Both CBSE and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) will release the criteria for the assessment of marks for class 12 board students. Recently, the CISCE and CBSE schools were asked to submit data of class 12 students’ performance in classes 11, 10, and 9. It is expected that the final class 12 marks could be calculated on the basis of performance in internals and past three-year performance. A final decision, however, is awaited.

CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi told NDTV that the CBSE's alternative assessment criteria for the cancelled Class 12 board exams will be framed after consultation with specialists it may take the board around two weeks to decide. "Assessment criteria for Class12 students have not been decided yet...It may take around two weeks for us to decide how Class 12 students will be evaluated," the news channel quoted Tripathi as saying.

During the meeting with PM Modi, it was also decided that like last year, in case some students desire to appear for the exams, such an option would be provided to them by CBSE, as and when the situation becomes conducive.

“The decision to cancel the exams was taken in the interest of the students,” PM Modi said adding that the health and safety of students are of utmost importance and that it would not be comprised under any circumstance. 

Tripathi also assured that the CBSE class 12 Board Exams 2021 results will be announced before universities begin their admission process.

"We are making sure that students do not face any issues when it comes to results...Want to assure students that they will have their results before admissions to higher universities begin," the CBSE secretary said.
