Commerce emerged as the most preferred stream among students after the first general merit list was out on Monday. City colleges witnessed many students, who had scores above 95%, opting for commerce instead of science. But, with more than 75% students opting for commerce, the competition to grab seats in commerce colleges is intense.

Though over the years, science stream has always been the first preference of top scorers, according to principals, this year, colleges have received a considerably large number of high scorers opting for commerce. Dahunkar College in Vile Parle has allocated more than 50 students, who have scored above 95%, in commerce.

Similarly Podar College in Matunga has got more than 30 students, who have scored above 96%, in commerce. Even Sathaye College in Vile Parle, which is usually popular for science stream, has seen more than 50 students with scores of above 90% opting for commerce stream.

“Previously, we would see not more than 10 students with a score of above 95% interested in commerce. This year, for the first time, we are surprised to see more than 25% students scoring above 95% opting for commerce in our college,” said Madhavi Pethe, principal, Dahunkar College.

Manju Nichani, principal of KC College in Churchgate, said the trend of high-scorers opting for commerce is due to the large scope that the stream offers as compared to others. “Commerce offers a plethora of focused courses at degree college also commerce gives students a chance to pursue MBA,” said Nichani.
