NSUI wins six seats, ABVP four in GU student senate elections

The Gujarat University (GU) campus seemed to celebrate Dhuleti a month in advance. Results of student senate elections were declared on Wednesday. The varsity, which wore a sullen look after the vice-chancellor imbroglio, was smeared with colours.

National Students Union of India (NSUI) emerged winners in the elections. The party grabbed six of the 10 available seats. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had to be content with four seats.

Elections to seven of the 10 seats were held Sunday. The three remaining seats are uncontested; one with NSUI and two with ABVP. The 10 seats represent an equal number of faculties at the varsity.

NSUI won in five of the seven contested seats, taking their tally to six. ABVP, which won two, now has four seats.

According to Gulabsinh Rajput, president — NSUI Gujarat, their candidate in undergraduate program of Arts, Digvijaysinh Zala, received 320 votes, 116 more than his competitor. Jayesh Desai (post-graduate in Arts), Bhavin Parmar (faculty of law), Prakash Chaudhary (faculty of education) and Ajay Rana (post-graduate in commerce) were other winners from the triumphant students union.

NSUI came out tops even though their candidature in under-graduate commerce faculty was cancelled following a controversial decision by the vice-chancellor.

"GU authorities and Gujarat government had put in their efforts to beat NSUI candidates but students showed faith in us. NSUI will now raise several student issues and demand investigation in corruption cases within the university," said Rajput. Ravi Desai, secretary, Ahmedabad ABVP, said that they won the crucial seats of commerce faculty. Varun Bharwad of ABVP was announced uncontested winner, while Nikul Desai (under-graduate science) and Darshan Desai (post-graduate science) were the contested winners.
