With ‘Jeete Hain Jiske Liye,’ Ayub Khan is back in the limelight

What made you take up the role ‘Jeete Hain Jiske Liye’?
I was tired of playing grey shades and was in the grind doing 10 shows, though nothing pivotal. I was seriously looking for a completely positive and meatier role. JHJL suited my needs — the character of Aman is that of a nice, warm guy who is an ideal husband. Also, since its makers were Diya-Tony, I am hoping that they create the Jassi magic again.

In a woman-centric show, won’t you find yourself sidelined?
See, the scenario today is such that out of sight is out of mind. I have to apply rationality and see how successful a show is going to be than get bothered with other things.

Coming from a film background, wasn’t it difficult to do television?
A few years back, television was looked down upon but not anymore. Today, it’s at par with films and tele-stars are as well-known. And success in any form is welcome, be it with films or television.

Are you bitter that your film career never saw a high?
I can never be bitter purely because from where I come I have made my mark. I was only known as Dilip Kumar’s nephew earlier. Though it’s fantastic to be associated with such an wonderful personality, at the end of the day you need your identity. And today, by the grace of God I have achieved that much fame that people recognise me on the roads by my name. So I have no regrets.

How’s marriage treating you?
It’s been a good journey and I have changed as a person for the better because of Niharika. Earlier, I was a difficult person who was very moody. But she’s been extremely supportive of me and taught me to be the easy-going person that I am today. I have learnt to get out of my shell and not be as pessimistic.

Would you call yourself a complete family man today?
I am this rooster who sits on his clutch and doesn’t like sharing the eggs. I am completely devoted to my wife and two daughters — Tahira is six and Zohra is three. I like their constant attention and affection.
