I don’t want to act, says singer Akriti Kakkar

Akriti Kakkar is one of the few singers in the industry who can easily grab eyeballs because of her smouldering looks. Naturally, a lot of film offers have been pouring in for lead roles.
“I have got a few offers but I don’t think I am taking them up. I am not supposed to act as I prefer singing. Since I can’t act to save my life, it would not be right if I start acting in films. It’s a very personal decision,” she says.

The 23-year-old singer has also got a very good response for her solo album. And she is also planning another music video for the album. “I have worked for more than two years to get this album in place. It feels nice when people respond to you positively.”

However, the private album culture is almost dead in the subcontinent thanks to the overwhelming presence of Bollywood. “I completely agree. This is very unfortunate that major music channels refuse to air full album songs. They don’t want to do anything beyond film songs. Even the radio channels have followed suit. This attitude towards private albums needs to be changed, very soon,” she emphasises.

Akriti has sung for major films like the Stepmom remake, Tere Bin Laden and many more. She has worked with major composers but AR Rahman is missing from her resume. “I haven’t worked with him yet. Like every singer, I also harbour the intention of working with a living legend like him.”

Like many of her contemporaries, she has also come to the fore through a talent hunt show. “When I participated, music shows used to be strictly about talent. But things have changed now. I think channels have done it to meet the commercial viability.”

Does she like the current lot of music shows? “I think music reality shows are a great platform for singers coming from remote regions. You would need thousands of calls to have an appointment with big music directors like Salim-Suleiman,” she ends.
