Janmashtami special: 7 Bollywood songs that capture the spirit of Krishna

Bollywood has always given us reasons and songs to celebrate the traditions and festivals of our country. One of the reasons for its popularity is that it brings to the celluloid the vibrancy and diversity of our culture. So, on the birth occasion of Lord Krishna this year, we bring to you our picks from Bollywood songs that portray the various shades of Lord Krishna's nature.

1. 'Yashomati Maiyya Se Bole Nandlaala' (Satyam Shivam Sundaram)

This song depicts how Krishna, as a kid, was troubled by his dark complexion in comparison to Radha. Those of you who know the popular folkores from Agra, Mathura or Vrindavan must be aware that Krishna was teased a lot by his friends owing to his dark complexion in relation to his elder brother Balram's too. 

2. 'Govinda Aala Re' (Bluff Master)

The festival of Janmashtami is synonymous with the ritual of Dahi Handi which is brought to the screen in a very lively and enthusiastic manner in this song. Add to that the moves and expressions of Shammi Kapoor amidst all the fun and frolic of the celebrations, it's a treat to watch.

3. 'Bada Natkhat Hai' (Amar Prem)

Krishna's mischievous antics during his childhood troubled mother Yashoda. But as much as she would scold and punish him, it was nothing in comparison to the love and affection she showered on him. This song captures all her motherly love in the best possible manner. 

4. 'Radhe Krishna Ki Jyoti' (Vivaah)

This devotional song captures the essence of faith with which numerous devotees flock to the birthplace of Lord Krishna and offer their prayers to him. Coming from Sooraj Barjatya's family-friendly world of cinema, this song is perfect to wind down to after the festivities of the day are over.

5. 'Maiyya Yashoda' (Jhootha Hi Sahi)

One of the lesser known tracks, Maiyya Yashoda from Jhootha Hi Sahi is an urban take on how the gopis would complain to mother Yashoda about Krishna stealing butter from their pitchers and how Krishna defends himself. This composition by AR Rahman is quirky and foot-tapping number and makes for a perfect track to groove to on Janmashtami.

6. 'Radha Kaise Na Jale' (Lagaan)

Popular for its choreography, the song captures the naughty shades of Krishna's early adulthood which made his beloved Radha anxious. The lyrics aptly highlight how Radha would be jealous of Krishna spending time with other gopis. The dandiya raas in the backdrop is another highlight of the song.

7. 'Go Govinda' (Oh My God!)

We absolutely heart this song for its peppy and upbeat rhythm and feel. Everything about this song puts you in the festive spirit. Showcasing the modern day Dahi Handi festivities in all its vigour, this song also marks the first one in which a girl (Sonakshi) breaks the dahi handi.
