Kalki 2898 AD ending and post credits scene explained! Spoilers for the film ahead
Nag Ashwin’s much-anticipated dystopian film Kalki 2898 AD was released worldwide on Thursday. The pan-India film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. Influenced by Hindu mythology, the film features characters from the epic Mahabharata, including Amitabh as Ashwatthama and Deepika as Sumati. The film’s climax and post-credits scene set up a grand future for the Kalki Cinematic Universe and hint about what is in store for the future.
Major spoilers for Kalki 2898 AD ahead!
Kalki 2898 AD stars Prabhas as Bhairava, a bounty hunter with questionable morals in the Kashi of the 29th century. But throughout the film, there are hints that there may be more to his identity. During a scene in Shambala, Ashwatthama reveals that the staff in his hand is actually a celestial weapon that belonged to his friend Karna (it is most likely the Bramashirsha Astra). Ashwatthama says that the weapon lost its magic once Karna departed from the world. However, during the climactic battle between Ashwatthama and the forces of the evil Complex, Bhairava wields the staff and unlocks its powers and a flashback reveals that he is the reincarnation of Karna.
What happens in Kalki 2898 AD post-credits scene
As the film ends on a cliffhanger with Sumati (Deepika), the woman carrying the Kalki avatar in her womb, is abducted by the bounty hunter Bhairava, Ashwatthama and the Complex are both in pursuit. A post-credits scene shows Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Haasan) at the Complex being revitalised with a drop of the serum taken from Sumati earlier in the film. The serum from Kalki allows the 200-year-old Yaskin to become healthy and strong again. He then wields the mighty Gandeev bow of Lord Shiva, reciting a shloka, implying that he will pursue Sumati himself now. Gandeev was untouchable by any man or machine till then but Kalki’s blood allows Yaskin to not just touch it but make it his own.
How the post-credits scene sets up Kalki 2
Gandeev is a celestial weapon, created by Lord Shiva himself and wielded by Arjuna in the Kurukshetra War. It is said to be nigh unbeatable. In the hands of Yaskin, it is a weapon of mass destruction. But as Ashwatthama recounts, there is a weapon more powerful than it, the one wielded by Karna. Now, with Bhairava having unlocked its power, it could prove to be decisive in his looming clash against Yaskin.
