Trisha made her acting debut with a minor role in the 1999 romantic drama Jodi, and appeared in the leading role opposite the Tamil superstar Suriya in her next film Mounam Pesiyadhe in 2002. The actress went on to appear in several successful Tamil and Telugu films over the years, such as Varsham, Ghilli, Aayutha Ezhuthu, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, Bodyguard, and '96 among others. Her only Bollywood film till date is Khatta Meetha opposite Akshay Kumar in 2010, which was a commercial and critical failure.

In the last two years, Trisha was seen as the leading lady in the three biggest hits of her career. She played Kundavai in Mani Ratnam's period epic Ponniyin Selvan 1 and Ponniyin Selvan 2, released in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Both the films grossed over Rs 800 crore at the box office worldwide. She was also seen in the action thriller Leo in 2023, which earned just above Rs 600 crore globally.

As per reports, Trisha charges Rs 10 crore per film and is among the highest-paid actresses in south Indian film industries.
