The trailer of the much-awaited Chiyaan Vikram-starrer Thangalaan is out and promises to be an intriguing Tamil drama set in the 19th century in the Kolar Gold Mines, which also served as a backdrop for the superhit Kannada franchise KGF. Acclaimed director Pa Ranjith, known for Sarpatta Parambarai, Kabali, and Kaala, has directed the movie.

Sharing the trailer on his X (previously known as Twitter) account, Vikram wrote, "Witness the Son of Gold mine through history with sacrifice, sweat and bloodshed." The period actioner also stars Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu and Hollywood actor Daniel Caltagirone in pivotal roles.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the makers said the story of the film captures "the actual history" of the Kolar Gold Fields. "Over 2 centuries ago, the Kolar Gold Mine Field was discovered by the British, who exploited and looted it for their own purposes," they added.

As soon as the trailer was dropped, netizens shared their excitement on social media. While one of them wrote, "Oscar confirmed", another added, "Pa Ranjith + Chiyaan Vikram = History Of Indian Cinema". "I didn't see this trailer in any industry, What a trailer, total goosebumps. Bye Bye Hollywood", read another comment.

The upcoming period actioner is produced by K E Gnanavelraja of Studio Green and has music by GV Prakash. Thangalaan was earlier slated to release on the occasion of Republic Day 2024 on January 26, but was postponed. Now, the film is scheduled for a worldwide release on August 15 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
