Blockbuster video renting shops are important symbols when it comes to representing the 90s era in American pop-culture. Here's your first hint that the movie is not set in the current timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We are getting an origin story.

After the revamp of Captain Marvel comics she got a sash around her waist and a helmet that gave her hair a mohawk look. The movie got rid of the sash and replaced it with a snappy belt, but the helmet has survived.

This shot looks like something bad is about to happen to Captain Marvel. It could be a torture chamber in Skrull domain, or it could be a device to analyse what powers did Captain get when she fought on planet Hal.

Hal is Kree planet. Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel's second home. We have met Ronan the Accuser and Korath from this planet in first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

This is where she became a member of Starforce.
