The faltering fortunes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe seem to have pushed Marvel Studios to take extreme measures. The last few films of the MCU have not just underperformed but also failed to connect with the audiences. Now, if a new report is to be trusted, in order to recreate the magi of vintage MCU, the studio is bringing back the Russo Brothers, directors of some of the most successful and loved films of the franchise.

The Hollywood Report has shared the talks are in early stages between the Russos and Marvel Studios about the possibility of them returning as directors for the next two Avengers films – the fifth and sixth in the franchise. The fifth Avengers film was titled Avengers: Kang Dynasty and was to feature Jonathan Majors as the titular villain against a new lineup of Avengers. However, after Majors’ conviction for assault, he was removed from the MCU. The film’s director Destin Daniel Cretton had also left the project by then. As per reports, the Marvel Studios is now reshaping the film. Avengers 6 is tentatively titled Secret Wars, a storyline from Marvel Comics that the Russos have long wanted to adapt.

Russos were involved in the MCU from 2014-19, directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. These four films collectively earned over $6.6 billion and Endgame was briefly the highest-grossing film in history. The two Avengers films are also largely regarded as the best films of MCU in terms of scale and fan engagement.

But since their departure, the franchise has not had the best of times. With the exception of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the films have not been profitable at the box office. The Marvels, their latest release, is estimated to have lost over $300 million. Four other films have failed to cross the $500 million mark at the box office, something every MCU film between 2011-19 had done.
