Marvel fans slammed the 'lazy casting' of Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom for Avengers Doomsday.
Actor Robert Downey Jr, who immortalised Marvel's Iron Man, has officially returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yes, as a Marvel fan, this news has certainly excited you, but RDJ won't be reprising his role of Tony Stark aka Iron Man. The actor will now play antogonist, Dr Victor Von Doom aka Dr Doom in Avengers Doomsday.
Robert Downey Jr introduced himself as Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic-Con, leaving his admirers and MCU fans shocked. Robert will be the big baddie of the next two Avengers instalments- Doomsday and Secret Wars. The upcoming Avengers will be helmed by MCU's hit director duo Joe and Anthony Russo.
A video from Comic-Con has been shared on Rotten Tomatoes, in which the Russo Brothers make way for Dr Doom and his army. Robert aka Dr Victor Doom walks to the stage and unmasks himself. Robert's revelation stunned fans, and they shouted at the big reveal. Downey made a victorious appearance to Hall H on Saturday evening to reveal his return
As soon as the revelation was made, it met with polarised reactions. While some fans are happy to see RDJ back in the MCU. A bigger section of fans slammed Kevin Feige's MCU for 'lazy casting' of bringing Robert back, but not as Iron Man. A fan wrote, "So Doom and Tony are mirror images- one goes the good way one goes the evil.. it’s too cute. Plus everyone is clamouring for Iron Man to return.. it’s too soon." Another netizen wrote, "I just don’t get why…. i mean im sure he’s gonna be amazing but just why." An internet user wrote, "I hope this is just a prank." Another internet user wrote, "Wow Marvel really desperate huh?"
For the unversed, Robert returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers Endgame (2019). RDJ and his film Iron Man kick-started the multi-billon film franchise, which has 33 films released, and 11 others in the production. The latest MCU film released is Deadpool & Wolverine. Avengers Doomsday is scheduled for May 2026 and Avengers Secret Wars is scheduled for May 2027 release.
