Assembly Election Results: Haryana facing hung assembly, Dushyant Chautala emerges as kingmaker - 4 possible scenarios

If the BJP can maintain its edge against the Opposition and emerge as the clear majority, it will undoubtedly form the government. Even if it doesn't secure a clear majority, there are a few ways in which the BJP can repeat its governance. Depending on the number of seats that are needed, it can try to negotiate with the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) which is leading in two seats.

The support of the independent candidates can also matter for government formation if the difference is more.

If the difference is more, the Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) can emerge as the kingmaker in the state, as its support is likely going to be the key in the BJP forming a coalition government in case of a hung assembly.

According to the latest updates, the JJP has emerged to be the third-largest party in the state, leading in 10 seats.

To form a government in Haryana, Congress might be needing the support of all the other contestants who haven't sided with the BJP yet, which includes the INLD, JJP and the independent candidates.

Earlier, the Congress had pitched in former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda as the chief ministerial candidate of the state this time, whose stake to claim might increase or decrease given the Congress' final performance in the Assembly polls. At 13:36 IST, Hooda said, "As the counting of votes is underway, former Haryana CM BS Hooda in Rohtak said, "The time has come for Congress, JJP, INLD, and independent candidates to come together to form a strong government." 

In either case, the Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) is looking to emerge as the kingmaker in the state, as its support is likely going to be the key in even the Congress forming a coalition government in case of a hung assembly.

In a rather unlikely but possible scenario, JJP's Dushyant Chautala might be offered by the Congress the post of the Chief Minister of the state, in a bid to form a government with any of the other two parties.

This might result in a situation like that in Karnataka in the last Assembly elections in 2018 when the JD(S) formed a government in the state with the Congress who earlier had a clear majority but was diminished to second place with the BJP having a plurality. The JD(S) allied with the Congress in Bangalore and the government was formed with HD Kumaraswamy as the Chief Minister, only to collapse earlier this year.
