Indian Army jawans posted at higher altitudes have to brave harsh temperatures every winter. With the lack of access to electricity, their only option is to turn to other heating solutions like burning firewood, kerosene or diesel. Ladakh based engineer and education reformer, Sonam Wangchuk has built the world’s first solar heated military tent and we cannot be more proud.

Wangchuk, who had shared the photos on his Twitter handle, has built the military tent for the Indian Army at the Galwan Valley. The tent can accommodate 10 jawans and is fully portable. The weight of the tent is less than 30 kilos and it can be fully set up in under a day and very quickly too.

Wangchuk in his post said that the tent is completely insulated and could sustain even under sub-zero temperatures such as minus 14 degrees Celcius. The tent does not require any external heating.

It takes the heat from the sun through the day and keeps the tent warm through the night for up to 12 to 14 hours. The tent also uses water to keep it warm and insulated. The tent, which comes with an entry and exit door was made in just four weeks.

Wangchuk also pointed out that the tent is carbon neutral, replacing kerosene while also tackling pollution. Work is still ongoing on the project. All materials used in making the tent are clean, green and insulated. The material required to make the tent can be locally procured.

Sonam Wangchuk is an engineer turned education reformer and innovator. Wangchuk, who was an inspiration for Aamir Khan’s character in the film, ‘Three Idiots’, has previously worked and designed a pre-fabricated solar-heated mud hut for the Indian Army stationed at higher altitudes. He has also established the Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), an institution that has revolutionised the education system in region.
