207 killed, seven arrested, curfew imposed: Latest updates on Sri Lanka blasts

Island country of 23 million people, Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday witnessed one of the worst act of violence after 8 powerful explosions shook the nation killing more than 200 people and injuring over 500. The blasts targeted famous churches and 5-star hotels in capital Colombo and nearby areas. 

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe condemned the attack terming a cowardly practice and have called a national security council meeting at his home for later in the day. The Sri Lankan government has imposed a curfew until further orders and have also temporarily suspended major social media sites. 

Leaders of the world have also condemned the deadly attack, killing innocents in Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the Sri Lankan counterpart and president to express solidarity in this hour of grief in the nation.

* At least 207 people including foreign national have been killed in the deadly attack in Sri Lanka. More than 500 are injured. 

* More than 35 Foreign nationals, including 3 Indians lost their lives in serial bomb blasts in the Island nation. 

* Blasts targeted three churches where worshippers were attending Easter Sunday services. Churches who were targeted in bomb blasts are St Anthony's Shrine in Colombo, St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo and Zion Church in the eastern town of Batticaloa.

* Three 5-star hotels were also targeted in Sri Lanka bombing. Hotels which were targeted are Shangri-La, Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury hotels.

* No terror organisation or group has taken the responsibility for the serial bombing killing more than 200 people in the Island nation of 23 million people. 

* However, Sri Lankan defense minister has blamed religious extremists groups behind this unfortunate incident. 

* Sri Lanka's defense minister said the attackers have been identified who are believe to be religious extremists. 

* Seven suspects have been arrested so far in connection to the serial bombing in Sri Lanka. 

* More than 15% of the Sri Lankan population is comprised of people from the Tamil community which is the second-largest ethnic group in the nation.

* The Sunday blasts are being termed as the deadly act of violence in Sri Lanka a decade after Sri Lankan civil war which claimed lives of more than 1 lakh people in 2009. 

* The Sri Lankan government have imposed a curfew until further orders and suspended major social media sites temporarily. 

* Out of 8 blasts, 3 occurred in churches, 3 in hotels, one at a guest house and another at a housing scheme. 

* Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo, termed bomb blasts 'a very sad day' and asked the government to identify the attackers and punish them mercilessly because only animals can behave like that.
