Discovering antique idols is one thing, but finding 80-year-old cable wires laid during British rule which are still alive is quite another. The ongoing work of Bhadra restoration has seen a slight change of plans due to this finding. The work is likely to be delayed as the wires have to be dealt with carefully.

The discovery was quite a surprise for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Civic workers discovered five high tension wires which still supply electricity to Kalupur while digging in front of Bhadra fort.

Elaborating on the finding, an official of the heritage department of AMC involved in the Bhadra project said, “We discovered five such cables laid in crisscross way in the area. These cables had to be dealt with carefully as they still supply electricity.” Also, one telephone line was found by workers while excavating which is also in working condition.

The unexpected discovery of high tension cables has forced the civic body to go slow with the work of restoration and construction of pedestrian zone. “We are working slowly and carefully in the area. The slightest damage to the cables may affect electricity supply to Kalupur railway station and around 10,000 houses from Bhadra to Kalupur.”

Another official of AMC, requesting anonymity, said that Bhadra has three transformers and the cables are supplying electricity to other transformers and also to nearby areas.

Interestingly, AMC officials found that the cables are copper wires, the production and use of which was stopped many years back. “Copper cable wires are no longer is use. These are very old wires and surprisingly still in working condition,” said another official. Due to the discovery, AMC has made some alterations in its earlier plans for the pedestrian zone.

“We will now construct a trench where these copper cables will be laid and will provide lids at certain distances in the pedestrian area,” added the official. AMC is also planning to have wi-fi and closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the Bhadra pedestrian area. The trench will accommodate cables for wi-fi as well as CCTV.
