The police tightened their surveillance and increased the number of police deployed in the affected areas after fresh incidents of violence were reported in Shahpur, Kalupur and Karanj on Thursday.
The Rapid Action Force (RAF) was also called to control the situation. Addressing a press conference, joint commissioner of police, sector 1, Satish Sharma told reporters that additional police force had been summoned and the situation in the city was under control.
Sharma said that 12 police complaints have been registered in connection with the recent riots, of which nine have been filed in the Shahpur police station. Two of the complaints were filed with the Madhavpura police while one was registered in the Kalupur police station.
The police have arrested nine people in connection with the riots while five others have been taken into preventive custody. Sharma said that the rioting in the city is being controlled and those responsible are being identified, arrested or detained.
Sharma said that 21 people including 10 police officials have been injured in the violence. Around 180 rounds of tear gas shells and 22 rounds of firing have been reported so far. Sharma said that six companies of SRP (around 500 personnel) and two companies of RAF (around 180 personnel) have been called to control the situation.
"Apart from that, we have also called additional 800 local police to the riot affected areas in the city," he said.
The police meanwhile are yet to investigate as to what exactly triggered the violence.
Sharma said that a brawl during a marriage procession in Nagorivaad area of Shahpur is what started the riots.
The police are also in the process of identifying history sheeters and detaining them.
He said that so far no political motivation for the riots has come to light although the possibility cannot be ruled out. "We will investigate all the aspects in the cases related to rioting," he said.
