'Centre should take against Karunanidhi for LTTE support'

CHENNAI: The Opposition AIADMK on Wednesday urged the Centre to take action against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for his open support to the proscribed LTTE and play a role in finding  a political solution to the ethnic Tamils issue in Sri Lanka.

A resolution adopted at the party's General Council, the highest policy making body, said that after coming to power in the aftermath of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the AIADMK Government headed by J Jayalalithaa had taken stern action against the LTTE, responsible for the assassination, and had played a vital role in banning it.
 
However, after coming back to power, Karunanidhi, while remaining silent against the supporters of the LTTE, went a step ahead and offered condolence eulogising the death of LTTE political wing leader S P Tamilchelvan.

Stating that this was an act of treason and would pave way for secessionism, the resolution condemned the Centre for remaining silent without initiating any action against him.

Favouring a political solution to end the sufferings of Tamils in the island nation, the resolution wanted India to play a role to find an early solution to the ethnic crisis and restore peace in the trouble-torn nation.

Tamil Nadu had become a haven for extremists and terrorist forces and had become an arms godown. The Police department, which had to preserve law and order, had become inept and there was no protection for the people.

On the one hand, the Government claimed that there was no naxal infiltration into the State. But, the city police had arrested a naxalite leader in the heart of the city itself.

The resolution alleged that naxals had infiltrated into Theni district and other parts of the State and police arrested five of them, of which one hailed from Chhattisgarh.
 
It also pointed out that two LTTE leaders and six of their associates were arrested at suburban Madipakkam, which was ample proof for the presence of LTTE activists in the State.
 
Another resolution alleged total break down of law and order in the State and said nothing was under the control of the Chief Minister as violent incidents continued right from the day the DMK came to power in May 2006.
 
Referring to the recent looting of arms from the Adhiyamankottai police station in the naxal-infested Dharmapuri district, another resolution said that if the Government could not protect a police station itself, how could it provide security to the people.
 
The arms looting incident took place a day after the DGP issued a statement denying any extremist activity in the State and that the law and order condition was perfect, it said and urged the Centre to impose President's rule in the State to protect the people from extremists.
