Dengue cases continue to rise, death toll reaches 102

NEW DELHI: Despite government claims about intensive awareness and cleanliness drives, dengue cases continue to soar in the country with the death toll touching 102 and 161 fresh cases being reported, taking the total number of those afflicted with the disease to 5,036.

 

Delhi reported three more deaths in the past 24 hours, while 92 fresh cases were reported.

 

Two senior citizens and a youth, who were being treated for dengue, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in the past 24 hours ending 8a.m, officials said.

 

Kunwar Singh (70) from Delhi's Rajapuri, Muzafar Iqbal (60) from Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar and Manoj Singh (30) Haryana's Gurgaon died at the AIIMS in the last 24 hours.

 

With 92 more patients admitted to hospitals across the capital in the last 24 hours, the total number of people afflicted with dengue has risen to 1,465, Municipal Health Officer N K Yadav said.

 

Of the total 92 new patients afflicted with the disease, 61 are admitted in AIIMS, Medical Superintendent D K Sharma said adding 32 patients were discharged today.

 

Another 170 people are under observation at AIIMS for suspected dengue.

 

According to National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, 161 fresh cases were reported in the last 24 hours in the country. The figure now stands at 5036. The government confirmed 96 deaths across the country. 

 

The government said they are providing support to the 16 dengue affected states, which includes insecticides, larvicides as well as monetary help.

 

After Delhi, the maximum deaths have been reported from Maharashtra where 22 people have died of the viral fever, while 240 cases have been reported.

 

Kerala has reported the maximum number of cases after Delhi. The state, which is also reeling under chikungunya, has 794 people afflicted with the disease, while four people have died due to it.

 

Rajasthan has reported 10 deaths and 456 people are affected due to the viral, while in Uttar Pradesh, 11 deaths and 418 dengue cases have been reported.

 

In West Bengal four deaths and 429 people have caught the viral. Similarly in Gujarat three deaths have been reported, while 441 people have been afflicted with the disease.

 

In Punjab three deaths have been reported, while 250 people have been affected and in Tamil Nadu one death and 307 cases have been reported.

 

While in Karnataka seven deaths have been reported, 90 people have been diagnosed with the vector borne disease, in Haryana one death and 113 cases have been reported and in Andhra Pradesh five deaths and 33 people have been afflicted with the viral.
